Materials

Organic Cotton

99% of the world’s cotton is conventional cotton, meaning it relies heavily on the use of chemicals including pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and synthetic fertilizers, alongside genetically modified seeds and huge amounts of water. We certify our cotton with GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard. This means that all cotton yarns certified by GOTS must contain a minimum of 95% organic cotton and cannot be treated with chlorine bleach, formaldehyde or other toxic chemicals and metals. Additionally, strict social standards must be adhered to, ensuring that working conditions are safe & hygienic, and that fair living wages are paid to employees.

Cradle to Cradle Cashmere

To avoid further desertification in Mongolia and Northern China and to create a more sustainable sourcing strategy around cashmere, we need to embrace both recycling and regenerative farming practices. All our air spun, tissue weight cashmere is finished in Italy and certified by Cradle to Cradle ensuring the yarn is sourced and finished responsibly using transparent and regenerative farming practices.

FSC Viscose

Viscose is a semi-synthetic material made from wood pulp. Our viscose is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council ensuring the wood pulp used to make our viscose comes from well managed, regenerated forests. Each year an estimated 400 million cubic meters of wood comes from FSC-certified forests. The rigorous standards behind FSC certification protect the plants, animals and people that rely on those forests.

Responsible Wool

We certify the majority of our Italian merino wool sweaters, trousers and blazers using the Responsible wool Standard. RWS certifies that our wool comes from animals that are well treated, from land that is well managed, mitigating damage to soil and improving biodiversity and that all people handling the wool are treated fairly and paid a fair living wage.

Craft

In addition to considering how to make our material choices less harmful to the environment, we are also working to protect centuries old crafts, in an effort to ensure certain skills and techniques are not lost. Some of these crafts include handmade macrame and crochet from a collective of female artisans in Bolivia, hosting basket weaving events with Erin Pollard and integrating stunning 1800 year old laces from northern France that are certified by Dentelle de Callais Caudry. These efforts are not only extremely enjoyable for us to work on as a team and with our friends and networks, they also give us a sense of purpose as we try to preserve old traditions, crafts and art forms at risk of being lost for future generations.

Recycled Cashmere

To avoid further desertification in Mongolia and Northern China and to create a more sustainable sourcing strategy around cashmere, we embrace recycling to regenerate the vast amounts of cashmere we have already created over the past 20 years. Where possible we rather recycled materials. Not only do they use significantly less water, electricity, chemicals, and carbon, but they also use waste, rather than creating it. Our proprietary blend of recycled cashmere & organic cotton is made in Italy and is certified by the Global Recycled Standard. All of our cashmere yarns are made to the highest standard, while protecting workers rights.

Our Naia™ Renew is a refined fiber made from responsibly sourced wood pulp, offering a silk-like softness with a minimal environmental footprint. Through a closed-loop process, it transforms post-consumer waste into a luxurious material that is both biodegradable and breathable.

Organic Hemp

Our organic hemp is a refined, natural fiber known for its strength and versatility. Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, it thrives with minimal water and supports regenerative farming practices. Breathable and durable, hemp fabrics soften beautifully with wear. By choosing organic hemp, we embrace materials that are as enduring as they are sustainable.

Biodegradable Buttons

Corozo Nut

Most buttons in the fashion industry are made from non-biodegradable plastic. We have found Corozo to be the most sustainable button material. Corozo is a plant-based material, derived from the seed or nut of the tagua palm tree in Central America. They are often called “vegetable ivory” since they are extremely hard and durable and mimic the appearance of animal ivory with a beautiful texture and natural looking finish. In addition, purchasing Corozo based products also helps prevent deforestation by protecting and regenerating forests while also supporting communities that gather these nuts.

Urea

Urea buttons are a sustainable plant-based alternative to traditional horn buttons, crafted from potato starch. They offer the same smooth, polished finish as horn and are fully biodegradable, breaking down naturally at the end of their lifecycle.

Troca Shell

Crafted from responsibly sourced Trocas shell, our Trocas buttons are a biodegradable and sustainable choice. Known for their luminous, natural finish, Trocas buttons offer a refined alternative to synthetic materials.
